UltraSTEEL is made using a process that alters the characteristics of the base strip steel, providing higher strength capacity from lighter gauge material. The process increases the effective thickness of the material (the depth of the double-helix ribbing) and, in practice, means that the gauge of the material can be reduced, according to the company. The metal is stiffened by creating a double-helix dimpled pattern on the surface, which is then further strengthened through work hardening by the combined effects of cold-roll forming, all in one continuous process.

Independent tests have shown improved screw retention characteristics, according to the company. The cross-section ensures every screw is in contact with a material thickness greater than the nominal gauge of the steel. Furthermore, the location of screws within the framing material creates inward pressure around the point of contact as a pull-out force is applied.

The dimpled surface of the section has been shown to reduce the levels of noise transmission through walls and ceilings, according to the company.

The product has received the following code approvals:

- The International Code Conference Evaluation Services in Report ESR-1977 certifies that it is a compliant building product and is approved for construction use even when not specifically named in existing codes.

- The American Society for Testing and Materials International adjusted the language in standard C645, the “Standard Specification for Nonstructural Steel Framing Members.” The new language verifies that the product complies with the specification and is not required to meet the 0.0179 inch minimum thickness that all generic studs must meet.

- The product received approval from Architectural Testing, Inc. in Code Compliance Research Report CCRR 0109 certifying that it is a compliant building product and is approved for construction use even when not specifically named in existing codes.
