Cooling Towers Target Legionnaires’ Disease

NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln have installed antimicrobial cooling towers that include features designed to significantly reduce the risk of harmful bacteria, according to Bronx Voice. The towers also are also expected to reduce the facilities’ energy use by about 40 percent.
The new cooling towers replace units that had reached the end of their expected performance lives. The model selected has features that prevent or impede the potential growth of bacteria, including Legionella, commonly known as Legionnaires’ disease.
The new towers' shells that hold the water have a rounded shape, as opposed to the boxy shape of traditional shells, with corners in which water moves less and bacterial growth can flourish. The rounded shapes do not allow water to become dangerously stagnant in spots.
