In October, Maintenance Solutions received an award for editorial excellence. Our November 2001 issue earned a silver award in the Business-to-Business/Engineering category from Folio: magazine, a leading publication for the magazine publishing industry.
Awards are always appreciated, and certainly, this award is a testament to the efforts of the team of people involved each month in putting together the magazine. Check out the masthead to the right and the ad index on page 22 for the names of all of those involved.
But if you take a step back, the award takes on an added perspective, one that might more accurately reflects its true meaning.
As with all of our issues, the November 2001 issue covered a range of maintenance and engineering management issues. The cover featured a profile of the engineering department at the NYU Downtown Hospital in Manhattan, which helped keep the hospital open and safe in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks — a topic that probably had a special resonance with the contest’s judges.
Another article profiled the efforts of Duke University’s maintenance department to help the university comply with federal access guidelines.
The issue also featured articles that gave readers practical information on safety myths, refrigerant management, air-filter specification, wiring and cabling considerations, and purchasing cleaning chemicals.
The common thread throughout the issue — and every issue— is the central role that maintenance and engineering managers play in the efficient operation of institutional and commercial facilities, from protecting workers and ensuring health indoor environments to specifying the cost-effective technology.
So while the award directly cites Maintenance Solutions for editorial excellence, at the same time it serves to reinforce the vitality and importance of the maintenance mission in facilities.
