Construction Complete On Redevelopment Of Granada Village
New design by Nadel Architects breathes new life into 48-year-old center
GRANADA HILLS, Calif. – Construction is complete on Granada Village, a 225,000-square-foot neighborhood center in the San Fernando Valley. Nadel Architects redesigned the center to feature a modern Spanish colonial style. Owned by Regency Centers, the $18.5 million redevelopment project upgraded the shopping center, built in 1965, in Granada Hills.
T.J.Maxx at Granada VillageLocated at 10823 Zelzah Ave., Granada Village is anchored by TJ Maxx and includes national retailers such as Stein Mart, Rite Aid, Sally Beauty Supply, The UPS Store, H&R Block, Burger King and RadioShack. New to the center following the redesign are the specialty grocer Sprouts Farmers Market, HomeGoods, Freebirds World Burrito, Zankou Chicken, Presto Pasta, Gatten Sushi and Pieology.
“Our design updated the center’s shopping environment, helping to attract a number of new tenants,” said Greg Palaski, managing principal of Nadel Architects and project director. “The end product is a more appealing destination for shoppers as well as a more desirable location for retailers.” Sprouts at Granada Village
Nadel’s redesign included a new exterior façade, upgraded architectural components, new signage and parking lot improvements. In addition, Nadel incorporated an al fresco dining area near the front of the center with connected patios and trellised seating to transform the center into a pedestrian-friendly village. Incorporating stacked stone and earth tones into the redesign blends the center’s modern upgrades with the Spanish style of the surrounding neighborhood, as well as makes the space feel more organic and inviting.
Challenges in redesigning this space revolved around the existing structures and tenant operations. The new space needed to be fresh and modern without clashing with the existing elements. Maintaining existing tenant operations was a concern during construction, but did not hinder the final design.

The LEED®-certified center also incorporates energy-efficient lighting, an underground storm water retention and treatment system, water-efficient landscaping and a charging station for electric cars. By reusing existing material and focusing the redesign around energy-efficient upgrades, Nadel continues to provide modern, sustainable design.
In addition to Palaski, Nadel’s project team consisted of Keith Martinez, project manager; Kiley Green, job captain; and Fernando Trinidad, senior designer.
Nadel has worked on a variety of similar redevelopment and expansion projects recently, including Heritage Plaza in Irvine, Calif., The Village at Nellie Gale Ranch in Laguna Hills, Calif., and Moorpark Town Center in Moorpark, Calif.
