The American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) recently released the AIHA guideline "Assessment, Remediation, and Post-Remediation Verification of Mold in Buildings." The AIHA committees involved in the development of this guideline were Biosafety and Environmental Microbiology, Indoor Environmental Quality and Law.
The guideline describes the range of exposure assessment, hazard assessment and re-occupancy post-remediation verification methodologies and techniques currently accepted and available to conduct assessments of mold growth in residential and commercial buildings. Additionally, the guideline outlines the minimum qualifications and proficiencies that define a "competent professional" for this purpose. The draft version of the AIHA mold competencies was presented at a press conference at the American Industrial Hygiene Conference 2004.
The guideline includes education, training and experience in specific areas:
• Exposure assessment
• Indoor environmental quality
• Heating, ventilating, and air conditioning
• Microbial assessment and remediation
• Building science
• Law/communication
