Boiler Reliability: How Hurricane Sandy Affected Repair-Replace Decision





Institutional and commercial facilities must prepare for a range of natural disasters based on their location, elevation and proximity to known hazards. But in many cases, despite the best-laid plans, maintenance and engineering managers must deal with the aftermath of such disasters, which can include damage to key HVAC components.

In the existing-building commissioning industry, our firm assesses, tests, and troubleshoots heating hot water and boiler systems throughout New York City. We pay closest attention to the controls, electrical components, piping arrangements, pressure-relief valves, and distribution-related steam traps. We rarely are concerned with the overall quality of the pressure vessel.

In the aftermath of a major natural disaster that struck the East Coast in 2012, we investigated numerous schools and other building in New York City to determine whether the best course of action for the owners was to repair or replace the buildings' storm-damaged boilers.
