Kaiser Permanente's new San Diego Medical Center highlights technology and sustainability while staying focused on patient experience, according to an article on the Health Facilities Management website.
Kaiser incorporated concepts from the "Small Hospital, Big Idea" hospital design competition into the $850 million, 617,000-square-foot facility.
Ideas from the competition helped the facility to earn LEED Platinum healthcare certification.
For instance, each patient room offers bedside control over temperature, lighting and window shades. Caregivers also can adjust lights and other conditions from a keypad outside the patient room without disturbing the patient.
