Flexible Pipes Support California Hospital’s Seismic Safety

Because of its proximity to earthquake faults, Loma Linda University Health in Loma Linda Calif., has developed engineering solutions to help withstand major seismic activity, according to Loma Linda University Health.

The facility rests on 126 building isolators designed to absorb ground motion during an earthquake, while allowing minimal building movement.

While the isolators are protecting the main building, there's a system of flexible pipes that will carry needed resources into the hospital.

Using flexible pipe systems will allow the facility to continue receiving power, water and other resources during and following a major earthquake.

The new construction project will include the Medical Center, which will house 320 beds for adult patients and a new Children’s tower to give the Children’s Hospital a total of 373 licensed beds.

New buildings for both hospitals will meet and exceed California’s upcoming seismic requirements for hospitals.
