No one has ever been fired for turning down the temperature on a data center's CRAC unit. The statement might be a cliche among data center professionals, but there's a grain of truth to it. That doesn't mean that the temperature issue can't be attacked. The reality is that many data centers operate cooler than they need because there is a fear that any changes would compromise reliability. The begin, know where the hot spots are and attack them. Airflow management is key. It's not unusual for a data center to run cooler than needed because of a specific area is running to hot. Consider relocating tiles. Use blank off plates if you don't have them. Once hot spots are under control, start inching the temperature up. Monitor performance for a set period of time. If there aren't any problems, consider another small temperature increase.
