Keeping energy costs for data centers in check is a constant challenge. One hidden area to consider is the UPS.
Most data centers have a UPS that is designed to be 90 or 100 percent loaded. On paper, that makes sense. But the reality is that most data centers take years to reach full capacity. In the meantime, the UPS isn't running at optimum efficiency, because the UPS isn't full loaded.
If you are building a data center that has room to grow, an alternate approach is to design a UPS so that it is most efficient at 60 percent load. For best results, talk with a UPS supplier early in the process and evaluate how long it might take for the data center to become fully loaded.
