Checking BAS References

RELATED CONTENT:
I’m Ed Sullivan, editor of Building Operating Management magazine. Today’s topic is building automation systems.
No one would hire a new employee without checking that person’s
references. The same should be true of a building automation system.
But actually checking references may require some persistence. It’s
really not enough to call another facility executive who is using a
building automation system that you’re considering. To really
understand whether the system will meet your needs, you should plan one
or more site visits. That way, you can see how the system is actually
used. The site visit also offers the opportunity for a more in-depth
and candid conversation about the system.
You also want to visit a site that is similar to yours in the way the
system is used. Again, that will give you a better idea of how the
system will handle the sorts of applications you actually have.
Vendors should be willing to help you set up the reference check. If
not, be wary. After all, would you hire a new employee without a
reference check?
