| Facility Form Meets Team Function
Owens & Minor’s new 160,000-square-foot home office in Richmond, Va., helps promote the company’s emphasis on teamwork. That’s because the new facility consolidates the offices of the Fortune 500 distributor of name-brand medical and surgical supplies from two locations into one four-story facility with 475 employees.
In addition to break rooms, small meeting spaces and casual seating areas, the top three floors contain 468 workstations fitted with Reach systems furniture, including the #19 chair, from Allsteel. The systems, selected by employees who tried to-scale mockups from three suppliers, feature integrated storage and workstations with 43-inch wall heights. The height allows occupants to communicate with other employees in adjacent areas without leaving their seats. In addition, spaces were customized during installation with individual wardrobe cabinets, the customer’s own materials on panels and Pantone colors to coordinate with the building’s design scheme.
The response to the workstations prompted the company to install other products from the manufacturer, including moveable walls to divide the multifunction space as well as a combination of tables and chairs.

| HIGH-SPEED HAND DRYERS PHASED IN AT CONVENTION CENTER
Wanting the building to be as environmentally friendly as possible, the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority installed many automated/low-flow units and hand dryers in Boston’s John B. Hynes Veterans Memorial Convention Center restrooms starting in the late 1980s. But with as many as 25,000 people visiting the Hynes at any given time, the restroom fixtures went through a lot of wear and tear over time.
After a while, for example, hand dryers stopped functioning properly. “The heating element would go and the air volume would diminish over time, so all you’d get was low-volume cold air,” says John Donahue, building superintendent. As the old dryers broke down, Donahue phased in XLERATOR hand dryers from Excel Dryer to replace them.
The XLERATOR provides an air stream of 16,000 linear feet per minute at the air outlet that blows off excess water droplets and rapidly evaporates the remaining layer of moisture, drying hands in 10 to 15 seconds, according to the manufacturer. The 900-watt heating element produces an air temperature of up to 135 degrees F at a 72 degrees F ambient room temperature at 4 inches below the air outlet. The dryer has a 35-second lockout feature if hands are not removed.
As the XLERATOR dryers were phased in, the convention center also removed any remaining paper towel dispensers. According to Donahue, in the two years since installation, the XLERATORs have functioned properly and have helped to reduce labor for cleaning the restrooms. EXCEL DRYER
