POWER RELIABILITY A TOP PRIORITY AT CHILDREN’S HOSPITALThe colorful façade of Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary looks like a random stack of colored building blocks. But while the exterior of the new 133-bed, 750,000-square-foot hospital is playful, the design team took the reliability of the infrastructure very seriously. One example is the high reliability of the standby power system. The design provides N+1 redundancy at all levels. Initially design engineers recommended two 2 MW generators to serve the hospital’s 3.5 MW total load. But hospital officials wanted to be able to run at full load even if one generator was down, so three generators were specified. The generators Cummins Power Generation model DQKC are housed in a building 400 meters (1,312 feet) away from the main building. This minimizes noise and vibration in the hospital and allows ground-level access to the generators. Because of the distance between the power building and the hospital, 4,160-volt supply lines run to the hospital. Increasing the voltage allowed power to be delivered with smaller conductors, reducing costs. It takes about 10 seconds for the generators to get up to speed. Fuel capacity is 50,000 liters (13,208 U.S. gallons). Depending on loading and the season, the generators can power the hospital for There are no transfer switches. Switching is done through the main breakers; seamless, synchronous switching is accomplished by PowerCommand digital master control system from Cummins. There are two touch-screen control panels for the generators and transfer system, one in the generator building and another in the penthouse. The system can be controlled from either point. |
Wireless Controls Suit Hospital SettingWhen St. Anthony’s Hospital, one of the largest hospitals in Oklahoma City, needed critical updates to maintain a comfortable environment for patients and staff, a top priority was to avoid disrupting patient care or hospital operations. But that was easier said than done, because the changes included replacing HVAC controls in patient care areas, isolation rooms, surgical suites and the mechanical plant. The solution was found in the APOGEE Wireless Field Level Network. Because the network is installed without hard wiring, the system has the potential to reduce the amount of cable and the number of ceiling penetrations, which lowers the amount of airborne contamination and other risks associated with construction.
The new control communication system improved operational efficiency, saving the hospital costly maintenance fees incurred because of outdated equipment. The wireless solutions can also limit maintenance costs associated with troubleshooting, as there is no physical communications media that can be accidentally damaged. |
Ballast Rules Change for 2008Recent changes in federal law and in the National Electric Code focus on ballast requirements to improve the efficiency and safety of lighting systems. The Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPAct) phased out the manufacture or import of mercury vapor lamp ballasts in the United States effective Jan. 1, 2008. Mercury vapor systems are less efficient than metal halide or fluorescent systems, which also offer better lighting quality, says the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA). However, stocks of mercury vapor ballasts manufactured or imported prior to the deadline can be sold until depleted. The legislation does not affect the manufacture or import of mercury vapor lamps. Another change in ballast requirements was spurred by cavalier safety attitudes regarding ballast replacement in double-ended fluorescent lamp luminaires. As of Jan. 1, 2008, the National Electric Code added a ballast disconnect requirement. Approved disconnect devices include switches and separable connectors rated for interrupting a load. The effective date for the rule depends on local jurisdiction timelines of adoption of the NEC. More information is available from the NEMA Lighting Systems Division for mercury vapor ballasts and for disconnect requirements. |
