USGBC Event: Energy Retrofits and Retro-Commissioning
Join the USGBC - Illinois Chapter's Fox Valley Branch for a program on Energy Retrofits and Retro-Commissioning at the first green home in Elgin!
Continuing Education: 1.5 GBCI CE hours and 1.5 AIA SD/HSW units.
This session is designed to educate attendees in the objectives and processes of Retro-Commissioning, beginning with an explanation of the term itself, and followed by an outline of the specific steps involved.
Two recent GSA retro-commissioning projects will be presented as examples of the process, consisting of:
The initial building system assessment and energy auditing procedures;
Specific energy and water conservation options that were considered for implementation, (including building envelope analysis, such as window sealing and replacement, additional wall and roof insulation; mechanical options such as chiller, motor, water heater, and building automation upgrades; electrical upgrades including light fixture replacement, occupancy sensors and daylight harvesting)
How those options were evaluated using life-cycle costing and energy modeling analysis;
How options were selected for the actual energy retrofit construction work.
The presentation will expand on specific efficiency measures evaluated for this project, and which of those strategies are often top considerations in similar commercial-scale retrofits. Since these strategies include architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and building management strategies, the presenters offer wide-ranging solutions of broad interest.
