Rosemont, Ill. — On the ninth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina’s destruction of the U.S. Gulf Coast, the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) is urging homeowners and business owners to use healthy skepticism when hiring a roofing contractor to repair their hurricane-damaged roofs and insist on working with a professional roofing contractor.
“NRCA always recommends a common-sense approach to finding a roofing professional,” says William Good, the association's executive vice president. “Make sure the contractor is licensed, if that is required, has a permanent place of business, and has proper insurance.”
Hurricane Katrina swept through portions of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi on Aug. 29, 2005. Its hurricane-force winds and storm surge affected everything in its path, including roof systems.
NRCA warns that after a hurricane, it is common for unprofessional contractors to take advantage of unsuspecting and distressed homeowners and do improper repairs on roof systems.
The association also strongly advises against homeowners climbing up on their roofs to perform inspections or remove debris, and urges homeowners to contact a professional roofing contractor to perform these tasks.
