New Courses to be Offered at ICSC's University of Shopping Centers in Philadelphia




NEW YORK – The shopping center industry is constantly changing to meet the demands of today’s professional.  Being educated on the latest trends and practices can maximize one’s chances to successfully keep ahead of the game. To offer the most up-to-date information to the industry it serves, the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) will host its annual University of Shopping Centers program, taking place March 5-7, 2012 on the campus of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pa.

The structured three-day program is the largest annual educational event ICSC offers, featuring over 40 advanced courses on cutting-edge topics relevant to the broadening retail real estate industry. Courses are taught by over 70 distinguished industry practitioners who are considered experts in their fields with numerous years of first-hand experience.

Attendees can select their courses to suit their needs by choosing from one course to up to six half-day courses, three hours per course, from eight different colleges of study.  This year’s program has been restructured and over a dozen new titles have been added to meet the industry’s informational and training needs. New to this year’s program is the College of Law for Non-Lawyers and the College of Finance for Non-Financial Professionals, long-time ICSC programs relocated to the University of Shopping Centers.

Areas of study include:

·         College of Asset Management and General Studies

·         College of Development and Redevelopment

·         College of Retailing

·         College of Leasing and Specialty Leasing

·         College of Law for Non-Lawyers

·         College of Finance for Non-Financial Professionals

·         College of Financial Analysis

·         College of Debt Workout, Transactions and Repositioning of Distressed Assets


Educational sessions will take place Monday, March 5, 2012 through Wednesday, March 7, 2012 from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and from 2:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m.  Opportunities to listen to keynote presentations at breakfast and lunch, to participate in a total of 10 networking opportunities, and to sit in on roundtable discussions will also be available for attendees when class is not in session.

A Certificate of Participation is awarded in seven colleges of study for those who complete six courses, four of which need to be from the same college.  The College of Debt Workout of Distressed Assets requires attendees to receive a passing grade on a final multiple choice examination to receive a Certification of Completion.

Registration fees for the ICSC University of Shopping Centers are $180 per class in advance and $200 per class on-site for members; for nonmembers the fees are $320 and $340, respectively.  To qualify for the advanced registration fee, applicants must register by March 2, 2012.  The complete curriculum is available online.

Also available will be an International Educational Study Tour of U.S. Shopping Centers in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York for foreign members of ICSC. Over the span of three and a half days attendees will have the unique opportunity to visit a mix of outlet, high-end, regional, and superregional centers. The centers on this tour include; Cherry Hill Mall; Westfield Garden State Plaza; Bala Cynwyd Center; King of Prussia Mall; and Woodbury Common Premium Outlets.  This shopping center tour will provide attendees with the opportunity to view new ideas and innovations that could be implemented into their own centers.  Attendees will be able to meet with the management teams of each center, share experiences, and discuss architectural and design concepts. Additionally, there is a full-day tour of New York City, accompanied by guest tour guide Faith Hope Consolo, chairman, retail leasing and sales division, Prudential Douglas Elliman Real Estate.  A special presentation on the redevelopment plans of Lower Manhattan and Downtown New York City’s Post 9/11 Renaissance will conclude the shopping center tour.  Fees for this program are $3,995 for members and $4,695 for non-members.  Fees include cost of hotels in Philadelphia and New York City, bus transportation throughout the tour, and most meals.
