LiveRoof Green Roof Brings Natural Beauty to the Rooftop of Bearden Hill Office Building in Knoxville, Tennessee

Knoxville, Tenn. and Spring Lake, Mich. —— McCamy Development has added a 1,300-square foot green roof to its new building located at 6450 Kingston Pike in Knoxville. The LiveRoof® Hybrid Green Roof System from LiveRoof, LLC (Spring Lake, Mich.) was selected for the project. Southeast Green Roofs, LLC (Fairview, Tenn.), a licensed regional grower and distributor for LiveRoof, selected and grew the green roof plants in the system’s modules, which were installed by Dixie Roofing (LaFollette, Tenn.).

The three-story, 10,500-square-foot building, constructed by Merit Construction, Inc. (Knoxville, Tenn.), is located atop Bearden Hill. It includes the offices of McCamy Development and the barre3 exercise studio.

“The green roof is designed as a rooftop garden with a panoramic view of Mount LeConte and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park,” said George A. Ewart, AIA, principal-in-charge, George Armour Ewart Architecture (Knoxville, Tenn.), the building’s architect. “It offers a natural setting to enhance enjoyment of the view towards the mountains.”

“We recommended LiveRoof because it is the green roof system that is full-grown at the time of installation. That imparts immediate beauty and reduces long-term maintenance,” said John Wisinger, landscape designer, Hedstrom Design, LLC (Knoxville, Tenn.), the landscape architecture firm that designed the green roof and patio area. “In addition, the plants were cultivated right here in our own region.”

“On the day we delivered LiveRoof for installation, the system’s modules were abundantly vegetated with regionally adapted, locally grown plants already full-grown and flourishing,” said Andy Sudbrock, plant ecologist, Southeast Green Roofs, LLC. “The specialized plants, developed for their beauty and ability to thrive on rooftops for decades, will require minimal maintenance.”

“Green roofs provide green space as an architectural amenity and offer other significant benefits,” said Bruce Bosse, president, Merit Construction, Inc. “Green roofs extend the service life of a building’s roof, moderate stormwater runoff, and reduce energy demand and costs (especially for air conditioning in the summertime).”
