REN Launches Ground-Breaking Escalator-Cleaning Device

Los Angeles — Oct. 20, 2014 – REN, an engineering and licensing firm specializing in cleaning innovations and facilities maintenance products, has announced the nationwide roll-out of its new hand-held escalator-cleaning system.

Already in use at airports, stadiums, casinos, hotels, and shopping centers, the system requires as little effort to use as a broom and is as easy to operate as a mop and bucket.

The device leverages an escalator's own propulsion to create the cleaning action, so no outside power is required and the escalator does not need to be shut down or turned off. The device is lightweight and low cost and is operated by one person.

An engineered cleaning pad delivers the specified amount of cleaning solution, then fits deep into the grooves and across the span of an escalator’s treads to clean effectively and rapidly. The system cleans both escalators and moving sidewalks from dust, grease, and stains in minutes, not hours.

“Escalators have been around for a hundred years and transport nearly 100 billion people a year in the U.S. alone," said REN President Ori Rosenbaum. “This kind of traffic simply demands daily cleaning. Until now, nobody could afford to clean escalators every day. Our system uniquely provides the required level of cleaning frequency at a cost so low, it can still provide bottom-line savings as compared to other machinery and methods.”

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, about 10,000 people a year are admitted to emergency rooms as a direct result of escalator accidents. If an unsafe surface is created from a spilled drink and not cleaned up or resolved within a reasonable span of time, liability may be placed on those responsible for maintaining that escalator, as well as the property's ownership or management. Slip-and-fall laws vary by state, but the need to quickly clean a spill on an escalator is a serious concern that for the first time has a low-cost solution.

The REN system addresses the three key escalator-cleaning requirements:

• Emergency spill resolution: Rapid, one-person deployment to spill site.

• Restorative cleaning: A thorough cleaning using multiple cleaning cycles.

• Maintenance cleaning: A fast, low-cost, daily or weekly cleaning solution.

The REN system is designed to clean most brands of escalator and moving sidewalks including: Otis, Kone, Mitsubishi, Goldstar, CNIM, Hyundai, Thyssenkrupp, Hitachi, Westinghouse, Schindler, Haughton/Peele, Fujitec and Montgomery, in 24-inch, 32-inch, and 40-inch and wider configurations.
