The EPDM Roofing Association (ERA) has recently launched a field-based research study to better understand how ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) roofing membranes perform after decades of real-world service and to develop better methods for estimating their remaining service life.
The study is seeking participation from building owners, roofing contractors, facilities personnel and roof consultants who have access to commercial EPDM roof systems that are at least 20 years old. Qualifying roofs may remain in service or be scheduled for replacement. Other requirements include black, unreinforced EPDM membranes with a nominal thickness of 45 mil or greater and samples must be collected from mechanically attached roof systems (if unreinforced), pressure-equalized roof systems, adhered roof systems or ballasted roof systems.
For facilities professionals, the research could provide useful data for determining how long an existing roof may continue to perform before replacement is necessary. The ERA will test membrane samples in their naturally aged condition before subjecting portions of those samples to accelerated heat aging and weathering. Comparing the results will help researchers better understand long-term membrane performance and potential residual service life.
Facilities professionals with potentially qualifying roofs must submit an interest form by Sept. 30, 2026. After receiving an inquiry, an ERA representative will reach out to continue the process and determine if the roof is a potential candidate. Additional project information may be requested by Oct. 23, and sample collection must be completed by Dec. 5, 2026. Participants whose qualifying samples are accepted will receive a $2,000 honorarium. An initial research report is anticipated in the spring of 2027.
