RECALL: Recessed Can Lights Pose Shock Hazard

Sylvania RT56HO 900 lumen recessed canister light kits have been recalled by LEDVANCE because the kits can short circuit, posing a shock and electrocution hazard when facility managers try to troubleshoot flickering lights.

"These Batch 0 products are affected by a performance issue causing strobing or flickering due to overheating," according to the LEDVANCE recall announcement. "This performance issue was resolved in all subsequent batches by adding a higher temperature capacitor and thermal pad."

LEDVANCE has received three reports of the lights shocking an individual, but no injuries, according to U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall 18-089.

About 45,000 units have been recalled in the U.S., plus an additional 11,000 in Canada. They were sold between June 2015 and October 2016, only through commercial and industrial distributors. Models 75137-0, 75138-0, 75139-0, and 75140-0 are included in the recall. Model codes are printed on the back of the white rim and on the product’s packaging.

Facility managers affected by this recall are directed to stop using the light kits, not try to troubleshoot installed Batch 0 kits, and contact LEDVANCE at 1-800-654-0089 for free replacement and installation by a technician.
