Green Performance: How Do You Measure Up?

Practice Greenhealth has published its 2025 Health Care Sustainability Metrics Comparative Report. The report features sustainability performance data from nearly 500 healthcare facilities nationwide. It provides a roadmap healthcare facilities managers can use to for understand where their facilities stand, along with where the greatest opportunities for improvement exist. 

The report summarizes median and 90th percentile sustainability performance for almost 500 healthcare facilities based on 2024 calendar year data from the 2025 Environmental Excellence Awards applications. Managers can use the report to benchmark facilities against similar organizations, identify improvement opportunities, celebrate successes and set goals. 

Categories include: climate; waste; chemicals; greening the OR; sustainable procurement; energy; water; and green building. Among the potential benefits for facilities managers who track and improve these metrics are: 

  • 10-30 percent reduction in energy, water and waste costs 
  • $100,000 or more in annual savings from proper waste segregation 
  • improved patient outcomes linked to better air quality and healthier environments 
  • enhanced reputation with the 70 percent of consumers who prefer environmentally responsible providers.
