LEED v4.1 Performance Scores: A Primer on New Prerequisites



Here are the specific requirements for how LEED and Arc work together to create analytics facility managers can use for long-term sustainable performance.

LEED and Arc work best when both programs are done together. Here’s how USGBC has tailored five new prerequisites in LEED to match the data collection categories in Arc.

1. Transportation

Arc data: Perform a transportation survey once per year.

LEED Transportation Performance Score prerequisite – Score at least 40, which is based on a LEED calculation encompassing all the ways occupants arrive at a building and the greenhouse gas emissions required (or avoided) for them to do so.

2. Water Efficiency

Arc data: Collect water use data for 12 consecutive months, and then continuously measure.

LEED Water Performance Score prerequisite: Have permanently installed water submeters that measure potable water, and score 40 based on LEED’s calculation.

3. Energy

Arc data: Collect energy data for 12 consecutive months, and then continuously measure.

LEED Energy Performance Score prerequisite: Have permanently installed energy submeters, and achieve both 40 on the greenhouse gas emissions score and 40 on the source energy score.

4. Waste

Arc data: Track and measure ongoing waste and durable goods waste for 12 months. This means measuring the total weight of waste and the total weight that is diverted from landfills and incineration facilities for one full year.

LEED Waste Performance Score prerequisite: Have in place recycling bins, and place storage locations for recyclable materials, including mixed paper, corrugated cardboard, glass, plastics, and metals. Achieve a score of 40 based on LEED’s calculation.

5. Human Experience/Indoor Air Quality

Arc data: Conduct an annual occupant satisfaction survey specifically focused on indoor air quality and measure indoor air quality readings for inorganic contaminants (like carbon dioxide and ozone) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

LEED Human Experience Performance Score: Based on three components: occupant satisfaction score (50 percent weighting), carbon dioxide score (25 percent weighting), and total VOCs score (25 percent weighting), achieve a total score of 40.
