Facility Management Certification Programs Bring Higher Pay, Greater Employability

Facility Management Certification Programs Bring Higher Pay, Greater Employability   December 23, 2009

Today's topic is the benefits of facility management certification programs.

Surveys consistently show that certification or designation programs lead to higher salaries for facility managers. For example, the FM Pulse survey conducted by Building Operating Management found that respondents with credentials had a median salary of $84,000, while those without credentials had a median salary of $72,000. That extra compensation is comparable to the difference in pay between facility managers with a bachelors degree compared to those with a trade school education, or between a bachelors and masters degree, according to the FM Pulse survey.

Anecdotal evidence also suggests that certification or designation can help facility managers find a job. In some cases, credentials are specifically requested by the employer. In other cases, the credentials help to separate one candidate from another.

There is a range of certification or designation programs that can help facility managers. For instance, BOMI offers the FMA (Facility Management Administrator) and RPA (Real Property Administrator) designations, among others. IFMA has the CFM (Certified Facility Manager) program as well as the FMP (Facility Management Professional) credential for those who have recently entered the field.

But credentials from outside the facility management arena can also be valuable. For example, a growing number of facility managers are obtaining LEED AP credential.
