Inside the Push for Net-Zero Schools

Two district leaders share their sustainability strategies and lessons learned.   May 9, 2025

As public school districts face rising energy costs and aging infrastructure, some are turning to net-zero building strategies not just to reduce emissions — but to inspire future generations. During a Show Central conversation at NFMT Baltimore, Dr. Alicia Hart of Alexandria City Public Schools and Cynthia Smith of Baltimore City Public Schools shared how they’re making net-zero a reality in their districts, one school at a time.

From geothermal wells and solar arrays to airtight building envelopes and curriculum-integrated green initiatives, these leaders are building more than facilities — they're shaping sustainable learning environments. And it’s not just about new construction. Both districts are implementing impactful retrofits in older buildings, from LED lighting upgrades to efficient HVAC system replacements.

What’s especially notable is how these efforts go beyond energy savings. Baltimore’s sustainability plan links operations, academics, and community engagement, while Alexandria’s initiatives extend into student-run greenhouses and native landscaping.

Carrying out sustainability initiatives requires involvement beyond the facility department. It takes everyone in the school. But how do you convince decision-makers, educators, and even teachers used to mini-fridges and microwaves to change behaviors for the sake of net-zero goals?

Listen to the full conversation to hear their answer. Also learn how to manage long-term operations and maintenance of these high-performance facilities.
