Campus Housing: Students Seek Better Tech Options

Higher education continues to evolve in many ways as tuition continues to rise, enrollment drops at many institutions and students are more loudly voicing their opinions about their preferences for their campus experience.

Those student preferences extend to housing, and it’s an area where students are not sending positive vibes, at least according to the 2025 State of the Student Housing Industry Report released by StarRez, a property management systems provider.

According to the report, resident satisfaction dropped 7 percent from what the standards were in 2024, reflecting a need for managers to expand their priorities from merely ensuring that the lights stay on and the temperatures in rooms stay comfortable to improving the tech experience. The report suggested three areas where universities should upgrade their investments.

  • Administrations need to upgrade efforts to free staff to improve mental health and conflict mediation support.
  • Institutions need to improve off-campus housing options. The report revealed that 78 percent of undergrads live off campus, but only 17 percent of institutions have a formal off-campus housing strategy.
  • Schools need to improve their feedback mechanisms. According to the report, only one-third of schools lack the mechanisms to measure student satisfaction.
