Institutional and commercial facilities are in the middle of a workplace evolution, leaving facility executives stuck in the middle to determine how this influences the spaces office employees are using.

As institutions continue to pursue certifications like WELL and LEED in efforts to attract and retain employees, facility executives are tasked with revamping workspaces. Facility executives now are planning unassigned seating space areas, accounting for wellness initiatives like water stations and making available healthy food options, workout facilities and designing building features like more natural lighting.

In this video, Ambar Margarida, an interior architect with the New York-based architectural firm Spacesmith, talks about the challenges that facility executives face when revamping the workspaces.

Dave Lubach is the executive editor for the facilities market. He has 10 years of experience writing and reporting about facilities management and maintenance topics.
