Many companies don't consider security upgrades until an incident occurs. And when a security breach does occur, the focus is often on preventing a repeat incident. The approach is understandable. But facility executives should insist on doing a risk assessment. A risk assessment may uncover additional threats that need to be taken into consideration. Doing a risk assessment will also help shape product purchasing decisions. It can help prevent the purchase of systems that are overly complex or more than what a company actually needs. But risk assessments aren't meant to be static documents. The best approach calls for updating a risk assessment regularly to prevent getting blindsided by new security risks.
