A fire sprinkler system’s performance depends on a reliable water supply. One thing facility executives should not feel safe to assume is that the water supply was adequate when the system was installed. This initial water distribution system flow test is often overlooked in the initial inspection of a building and data obtained before construction is complete might not be accurate.

A green light on the main drain test does not necessarily mean the system supply is adequate. Water distribution has to be calibrated to the actual design of the sprinkler system. In a new building, a hydrant flow test should be conducted during the initial acceptance testing for the sprinkler system. For an existing building, a water supply flow test should be performed at the next inspection of the sprinkler system if the original test was not performed or the findings not recorded.
