Managing Outsourced Critical Facilities

When facility management duties are outsourced in a critical facility, such as a data center, facility executives need to take extra precautions. Making sure there is a good contract in place and that it is well managed is important.
The contract should include provisions for performance management, including the ability to adjust or change the measures and targets to adapt to changing priorities. Structured meetings to support effective communication, reporting and processes should be spelled out in the contract.
Given the turnover possible in using service providers, the contract and related specifications, as well as the procurement process, should define the responsibilities and processes for transition-in at the start of the contract as well as transition-out at the end of the term. Defining the transfer of personnel, training and knowledge during a transition is especially important.
