Do IT Professionals Care about Green Data Centers? Survey Results Show Where Industry Is Heading
Feb. 3, 2015 — With major data center providers making headlines for renewables and efficiency, Green House Data wanted to know if the IT industry really cares about the environmental footprint of their data center.
We polled 166 IT professionals, from system administrators to the CTO. What they had to say was surprising: In a nutshell, it makes smart business sense to have a green data center, as it saves on operating costs, but whether IT departments consider efficiency or sustainability when evaluating service providers is up for debate.
Some survey highlights:
• Fewer than 10 percent of IT professionals consider any green factor a primary focus when evaluating a service provider.
• 1/3 think cooling design or total energy consumption is “very important.”
• 2/3 of IT pros said overall environmental impact is either a “minor consideration” or “low priority but important.”
• Surprisingly, only 16 percent of respondents said power usage effectiveness (PUE) was very important when choosing a provider.
