Building Restoration Specialties Project May Become A National Landmark

DENVER – Local restoration company, Building Restoration Specialties, Inc. (BRS), may have helped Denver possibly secure its first national historic landmark.
Last year, BRS restored Civic Center Park, its Greek Amphitheater and Voorheis Memorial, as well as the City and County Building. In addition, BRS is currently in the process of restoring the McNichols Building. Historic Denver recently nominated these structures – along with the nearby State Capitol building and Veteran’s Park – to be designated as national historic landmarks.

If the designation is received, the area will become the first national historic landmark in Denver, and the second in the state. The lengthy nomination process includes measurement against six national criteria to determine the area’s significance in history. BRS learned the project recently was selected for continuation by National Park Service staff. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar will make the final decision within the next several months.

Mark Bernstein, Denver’s downtown area planner who worked closely with BRS President Rhonda Maas and the other contractors in the restoration project, lauded the team.

“So much of what we do relies on great partnerships between public and private entities,” he said. “Rhonda has tremendous passion for historical preservation. Having her and her skilled crew on our team was invaluable.”

The Better Denver Bond Project funded the $9.5 million Civic Center Park restoration. As a result of the work, Colorado Preservation, Inc. removed the area from its list of Endangered Places and promoted it to SAVED! In addition, it was selected as the Masonry Construction Project of the Year in 2011 and City Parks Alliance designated the site a “Frontline Park,” which highlights urban parks that are creating economic, environmental and social capital through new kinds of partnerships.
