McCarthy Building Companies Begins Construction on New Johnson Controls $150 Million Engineering and Test Facility
McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. recently started work on a $150 million Johnson Controls Applied Development and Engineering Center in Hopewell Township, near York, Pennsylvania. The center will consolidate testing facilities spread out over Johnson Controls’ existing campus, located 15 miles north in York, into a new state-of-the-art facility. The project is a joint venture between McCarthy, PJ Dick, and Stewart & Tate Contracting.
The Johnson Controls Applied Development and Engineering Center will comprise two separate buildings, a 250,000-square-foot test laboratory and a 107,000-square-foot engineering building. The test facility will include the latest testing technology for air handlers and chillers and will be the largest test facility in North America.
“This facility is a one-of-a-kind project, and ultimately the joint venture team was selected based on their depth of experience in constructing unique research facilities across the country and specifically in the Mid-Atlantic region,” said Laura Wand, vice president of global chillers, Johnson Controls Building Efficiency. “This unprecedented investment supports our commitment to engineering and marketing the best chillers and air handling units in the world. Our new Johnson Controls Applied Development and Engineering Center and our highly technical workforce in York County and around the world will continue to drive global growth for Johnson Controls.”
An estimated 480 jobs will relocate from the current Johnson Controls campus to the new facility once it is complete. The current campus will also remain open.

The new facility is scheduled to open in late 2017. IDC Architects, a division of CH2M Hill, is providing architectural and engineering services for the project.
