Trane Offers Industry's First Commercial Air Handler with a Photocatalytic Oxidation Air Cleaner as a Standard Option

Trane Catalytic Air Cleaning System

delivers cleaner air and better indoor air quality

Lexington, Ky. - Trane, a leading global provider of indoor comfort systems and services and a brand of Ingersoll Rand, now offers the industry’s first photocatalytic oxidation air cleaning system as a standard option for cataloged air handling units.

Trane engineered the innovative Trane Catalytic Air Cleaning System (TCACS), now a standard option with the Performance Climate Changer™ air handler, to deliver cleaner air and better indoor air quality while providing lower energy and maintenance costs and environmental impact compared with conventional air cleaning solutions.

The Performance Climate Changer air handler with the TCACS option is ideal for healthcare facilities, offices, schools, airports and other environments where indoor air quality is critical. Indoor air quality can significantly impact building occupants.

“Customers increasingly understand the importance that indoor air quality plays in creating a high performance building that helps them achieve their business mission,” said Charlie Wilkinson, product manager of cataloged air handling units for Trane. “The Trane Catalytic Air Cleaning System, combined with the Performance air handling unit, efficiently provides high quality indoor air for a cleaner, more comfortable environment.”

Equipping an air handler with a TCACS can help reduce certain biological organisms such as spores, bacteria and even the tiniest viruses. The Center for Health Design found 120 independent studies linking infection rates to a hospital’s physical condition — including poor indoor air quality.

Clean air also can be critical for employee health and productivity. A recent study by the University of San Diego and CB Richard Ellis found that healthier buildings reduce sick time and increase productivity of employees, in comparison to non-green buildings.

Cleaner air and better indoor air quality represent a major step in transforming facilities into high performance buildings that tie to the organizational mission of a hospital or business. High performance buildings take a whole building approach to performance while creating spaces that are reliable, safe, healthy, comfortable and efficient.

High performance buildings meet specific standards for energy and water consumption, system reliability and uptime, environmental compliance and occupant comfort. All standards are set to deliver established outcomes that help building owners and occupants achieve their business missions.

The TCACS provides a unique blend of three technologies: particle filtration, ultraviolet germicidal irradiation, and a photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) process. This system provides three steps of air cleaning:

MERV 13 or higher particle filters provide the first stage of contaminant capture

Ultraviolet (UV) lights provide irradiation of the stationary surfaces such as coils and drain pans to reduce the likelihood of growth of germicidal contaminant.
UV lights activate the catalyst on the media to enable the chemical reaction to reduce the carbon based contaminants in the airstream.

In addition to air cleaning systems, Performance Climate Changer air handlers feature energy recovery, airflow monitoring, and advanced humidity control options that improve the building environment and better control temperature and humidity, while optimizing performance.
