Since 1993, Maintenance Solutions has delivered information that maintenance and engineering managers in institutional and commercial facilities need to improve their departments' performance.
But we wanted to do more. These departments are essential for efficient facility operations and organizational success, but most go largely unnoticed. So we created the Maintenance Solutions Achievement Awards to spotlight their accomplishments. The 2010 winners demonstrate the reason maintenance and engineering is essential. Among the winners:
Texas Children's Hospital. Optimizing existing chilled-water and steam systems — with no capital investment — saved the Houston hospital more than $847,000 in annual chilled-water and steam energy costs.
University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Energy and water-efficiency actions have saved the university more than $11 million in utility costs since 2001.
Deming (N.M.) Public School District. The district became a licensed general contractor to perform small renovations with a declining budget and rising construction costs. 2009 savings topped $200,000.
San Diego International Airport. Acting as general contractor for a $1.2 billion expansion, facilities management completed the project in 99 days and well under budget.
Clark County (Nev.) School District. The organization streamlined its organization and improved accountability and communications. The changes resulted in cost savings totaling more than $15 million since 2005.
The remaining winners: Lockheed Martin in Orlando, Fla., and the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. Check out the winners and all of the submissions at my.facilitiesnet.com/forums/5150.aspx. And watch for news on next year's contest. Bring some recognition to those who truly deserve it.
Dan Hounsell offers observations about trends in maintenance and engineering management and the evolving role of managers in facilities.
