As maintenance and engineering managers seek to reduce lighting costs in their institutional and commercial facilities, a growing number are turning to wireless lighting control systems.
One challenge in this process is that the term wireless lighting controls means different things to different managers, depending on the type of facility.
"The use of the words 'wireless lighting control system' by one person could imply a solution intended only for a single conference room in a commercial building," says Carlos Villalobos of WattStopper. "For someone else, the use of the same terminology could signify a complex control lighting network installed in a parking lot that utilizes radio frequency to signal a group of fixtures to turn on, turn off, or dim to a predetermined lighting output value."

Many education, healthcare and commercial facilities use wireless lighting controls in some capacity to help curb energy costs and improve security in and around facilities, and each application provides unique challenges for managers.
