Description: This is responsible technical and supervisory work in the maintenance and repair of all Fire Department buildings and structures. Work involves responsibility for participation in the planning, design, and constitution inspection of new buildings, as well as for the maintenance of existing facilities.
This role encompasses highly skilled technical, repair, and general maintenance work with a focus on the properties, equipment, and buildings of the New Haven Fire Department. It involves the supervision of a team responsible for the maintenance and repair of department facilities including ten distinct fire stations, each with its own unique architectural style, layout, and maintenance requirements. The Supervisor oversees the upkeep of properties that range from expansive grounds to more compact footprints, accommodating a total staff of over 300 personnel.
Consults with officers in charge of fire stations as to the safe condition of all structures, living quarters, and office areas; responds to calls for repair or improvements to buildings and facilities, managing all necessary repairs of improvements to be made as soon as practical.
Oversees and participates in the repair of plumbing, carpentry, painting, and electrical systems across Fire Department buildings and facilities.
Plans preventative maintenance work; reads blueprints, lays out work, and prepares cost estimates.
Maintains records of all matters pertaining to the various buildings and facilities and prepares annual reports regarding related matters such as expenditures for maintenance and improvements.
Participates in the maintenance and repair of fire hydrants as needed.
Conducts preventive maintenance and repair activities on a variety of heating and cooling systems, including oil-fired and gas-fired furnaces, as well as air conditioning units.
Provides support and assistance during multiple-alarm fires, ensuring that necessary equipment and resources are readily available.
Requirements include:
Graduation from high school, supplemented by vocational or trade school training in the building trades; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
Thorough knowledge of building design and construction, building codes, ADA requirements, and other relevant regulations governing public facilities.
Knowledge of fire station design and construction preferred.
Knowledge of State and Local building codes and OSHA standards with regards to work and supplies used in the performance of duties.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, including planning, scheduling, and resource allocation. Experience with project management software is a plus.
Proficiency in trades such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, heating, masonry, and painting.
Familiarity with building automation systems for monitoring and controlling building systems, such as HVAC, lighting, and security.
Skill in the use of tools of the building trades; demonstrated mechanical aptitude.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints and plans.
Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot maintenance and repair issues.
Possession of and ability to maintain a valid driver’s license.
Must be available to respond as required in response to a variety of emergencies throughout New Haven Fire Department buildings, facilities, and multiple-alarm events.
