Description: The Metrolink Internship program is a unique opportunity for current college students to gain real-world experience, work with industry leaders and exercise practical application of academic studies within a department of interest. As a member of the Facilities and Non-Revenue Fleet Maintenance division you will get the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a wide variety of professional level engineering duties and responsibilities. You will collaborate with industry professionals and support the Facilities and Fleet Rehabilitation Projects and daily operations.

Our interns work closely with our team members to develop innovative solutions that help us deliver a better services for our customers. Ideal candidates will be self-motivated, hard-working and creative. They will demonstrate a professional demeanor, work well with others and have strong written and verbal communications skills.

This position will be limited to working no more than 19 hours each workweek. Hours may increase for short periods of time but may not exceed 40 hours in a work week and any hours that exceed the 19 hours must be approved in advance. The internship may continue as long as total hours worked each fiscal year (July 1 – June 30) does not exceed 1,000 hours.

Supervision Exercised and Received:

Receives supervision from departmental management/supervisory level roles.

This position has no formal supervisory responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The duties listed below are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed and are not to be interpreted as an exhaustive list of responsibilities:

May perform a variety of administrative support duties such as conducting research, gathering data, preparing spreadsheets, and other similar functions.

Uses a computer to perform job related tasks, input and maintain records, and/or conduct research as needed.

May conduct field visits and complete applicable safety trainings.

Strong and effective communication skills both verbally and in writing.

Evaluates programs and processes to recommend improvements.

Provides assistance on special projects.

Performs other duties as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Education and Experience

Metrolink internship candidates must be currently enrolled in a college, university, educational institution, vocational school or program.

Students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical or Industrial Engineering, Architecture, or a related field.

Demonstrate a commitment to public service and our shared values.

Valid Class “C” Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record of no more than three moving violations and no DUI’s within the last three years.

Must be at least 16 years of age.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Transition between a stationary position at a desk or work location and move about Metrolink facilities or other work site locations.

Operate tools to perform the duties of the position; such as computers, office equipment and work-related machinery.

Transport equipment or boxes up to 25lbs.

Exchange ideas by means of communication.

Visual acuity to detect, identify and observe employees or train movement and any barriers to movement when working on or near railroad tracks.

Hear and perceive the nature of sounds when working on or near railroad tracks.

Balance, ascend/descend, climb, kneel, stoop, bend, crouch or crawl within assigned working conditions and or locations.

Working Conditions

Position requires work in a normal office environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, or temperature. Work may also be conducted in outdoor environments, at construction sites, Railroad Track and Right-of-Way environments, and warehouse environments, with possible exposure to individuals who are hostile or irate, moving mechanical parts, and loud noises (85+ decibels, such as heavy trucks, construction, etc.)
