Only wind power generates more energy than solar thermal systems, according to a new report on renewable energy by the International Energy Agency.

The report surveyed 41 nations, including the United States, China, Australia, Canada, and most of Europe. The nations covered include 3.74 billion people and 90 percent of the solar thermal market.

The total capacity installed in the 41 nations equals 98.4 gw, which yielded 58,117 gwh or energy in 2004. The energy generated corresponds to 9.3 billion liters of oil, and displaced 2.4 million tons of carbon dioxide, according to the report.

Compared to renewable energy, wind power ranks first, followed by solar thermal heat, geothermal, photovoltaic and solar thermal power.

Of the nation’s surveyed, China led the world in installed solar thermal capacity followed by the United States, Japan, Turkey, Germany, Israel, Australia, Greece, Austria and Brazil.
