More Companies Cut Office Space Costs

A new survey shows that more companies are considering telecommuting and other strategies to reduce the amount they spend on office space.

Jones Lang LaSalle Inc. recently polled the real estate directors of 50 major corporations to rate their best options for reducing property-related costs. The leading choice for 37 percent of the officials surveyed was telecommuting and hoteling, where employees don't have assigned desks. Two years ago, only 6 percent selected that option.

More and more companies are finding that they are able to squeeze their operations into less office space by implementing such policies as hoteling. Telecommuting, meanwhile, is being made easier and more efficient by mobile phones and the emergence of broadband and wireless Internet access.
