A new memorandum of understanding between the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) aims to improve the efficient use of energy and minimize the impact of energy use on the environment, IESNA has announced.

Goals of the IESNA-DOE partnership include:
1. Utilize input from technical experts to promote development of the DOE Building Technologies Program and the DOE efficiency standards, as well as appropriate IESNA standards and procedures.
2. Assist the lighting measurement and application community in the photometric measurement of solid state lighting devices and other technologies by developing guides and procedures. This will provide consistency and uniformity in photometric reports, and also support the development of ENERGY STAR criteria for solid-state lighting.
3. Focus on energy conservation strategies to benefit design professionals and users.
4. Develop educational modules for inclusion in IESNA course materials for use by the Society’s Sections and other organizations.

IESNA is the recognized technical authority on illumination, communicating information on all aspects of good lighting practice to its members, the lighting community, and consumers. Its technical committees correlate research, investigations, and discussions to guide lighting professionals and lay persons through consensus-based lighting recommendations.
