A new manual from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) is designed to help users understand ASHRAE’s energy conservation standard in energy efficient design.

The User’s Manual for ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-2004, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, has been through an extensive revision process. Major changes have been made in the organization, the envelope weather criteria and other updates related to standard. A chapter has been added to explain the new building performance rating method, covering how to better use the standard in energy comparisons.

The 90.1 User’s Manual provides detailed instruction for the design of commercial and high-rise buildings to ensure their compliance with the standard. It includes sections on administration and enforcement, building envelope, HVAC systems, service water heating, power, lighting, the energy cost budget method and the building performance rating method.
