Are Elevators the Next Smart Items for Facility and Maintenance Managers?

What’s next on the “smart list” for facility managers and maintenance and engineering managers? It is looking like the “smart” elevator.

According to an article at, elevator companies are developing smart-elevator monitoring systems that will enhance ride efficiency and alert building maintenance staff to potential problems before breakdowns happen.

The monitoring systems reportedly will help facility managers set their elevators to adjust to surges in operation. The cloud-based system also can help maintenance workers anticipate potential problems before having to shut down operations for repairs.

The article notes a Columbia University study that showed New York City office workers spent a cumulative 16.6 years waiting for elevators during one calendar year, so regular elevator users might appreciate any extra time a smart elevator can add to their day. Time reports that the elevators will be rolled out over the next two years.
