Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships, Inc. (NEEP), a regional nonprofit organization committed to promoting energy efficiency in homes, buildings and industry, today announced the receipt of a $150,000 grant from the Henry P. Kendall Foundation for a 15-month project to advance the design and construction of high-performance schools in the region.
Northeast school officials will have the opportunity to learn from successful approaches to design and build high performance or 'green' schools. Northeast states also will have the opportunity to learn from effective policies to promote high-performance schools in other states.
NEEP developed the High Performance Schools Exchange in 2002 with the Boston Regional Office of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the New Hampshire Governor's Office of Energy and Community Services and National Grid, as a strategy to provide school districts in the Northeast with comprehensive technical and procedural resources regarding K-12 school construction and renovation.
NEEP's High Performance Schools Exchange builds on and integrates the tools and resources developed by national and state programs to promote high-efficiency school facilities and healthy learning environments. Initially, NEEP's collaboration includes the departments of education in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont; and national programs offered by the U.S. Department of Energy's Rebuild America Program; the Sustainable Buildings Industry Council; and the California-based Collaborative for High Performance Schools.
In addition to the development of regional guidelines that define high performance schools through the High Performance Schools Exchange, NEEP aims to facilitate an exchange among Northeast states regarding policies to encourage high performance school construction; to develop a baseline of activity and awareness regarding high performance schools in the region; to serve as an information clearinghouse for the Northeast region on the topic; and to link communities concerned with school construction with information and resources to assist them in adopting high-performance school design principles.
