Include Cost and Benefit Analysis in Door Hardware Selection

As with all systems and products managers consider for use in their facilities, the specification process must encompass an array of considerations. In the case of door hardware, these considerations need to include the impact on the bottom line.
“Retailers are looking for ways to make their business safe and secure while reducing cost,” Durham says. “Managing cost while maintaining a secure, safe and healthy environment is no easy task.”
Specification also needs to include a discussion of the operational benefits of door hardware.
“Monitoring, tracking, and managing security credentials quickly and efficiently provides retailers the much needed operational support,” Durham says. “The ability to manage and audit high-security areas and product without inconveniencing the customer is a balancing act. Partnering with a manufacturer who understands the customers pain points and provides solutions is more important today than ever before.”
Finally, managers should take a close look at maintenance requirements for products that will have to endure a great deal of wear and tear once installed.
“As with all business, the changes have caused many companies to re-evaluate installations and maintenance,” Durham says. “Installing budget-friendly, touch-free hardware allows retailers to make building improvements without jeopardizing the service to customers.
“Retailers with expanded hours and customer volume may have experienced an increase in the need for maintenance due to the more than normal wear and tear. In some cases, the expanded usage can cause a manager to consider a maintenance plan. Maintenance not only supports the ongoing security of the building. It can also ease the additional workload created by reductions in the workforce through the implementation of a service/maintenance program.”
