ClimateCraft: FlexSpeed Motors Cut Energy Use In Fan Arrays with VSDs


May 20, 2015 — ClimateCraft is introducing FlexSpeed motors, designed to improve energy efficiency in fan arrays with variable frequency drives (VFDs).

FlexSpeed is a polyphase induction motor that allows the system to use the VFD’s native voltage enhancement features to maximize part load efficiency. General purpose motors used with VDFs in fan arrays lose efficiency when operating above 60 Hz. FlexSpeed delivers efficiencies well above those of today’s general-purpose motors operating at greater than 60 Hz – over a fan array system’s entire constant horsepower range, from 60 to 120 Hz, and at full and part load.

This can translate to a 3 to 5 percent reduction in annual power use when compared to general-purpose motors, and a 5 to 10 percent energy reduction when compared to competitive integral horsepower motors. 

In applications where fans have long operating hours, like labs and hospitals, “a 3 to 5 percent reduction in fan usage can result in a significant reduction in overall facility energy use,” said Walter Mecozzi, senior vice president of engineering.

In addition, FlexSpeed motors run cooler, reducing maintenance and extending motor life.
