Water-Conservation Pledges Sought to Help Valley Campus Save Water

Salt River Project is looking for help from Valley residents to give Homeward Bound’s Thunderbird Family Village Campus future savings in its water bills.

As part of its Together We Conserve multi-media campaign to raise awareness of water conservation, SRP has launched a contest in which participants can pledge to conserve water by submitting their best water-saving tips.

After a goal of 5,000 pledges is submitted, SRP will celebrate by helping Homeward Bound conserve water at several of its transitional housing facilities.  The “water makeover” will include a $5,000 grant from SRP that will help Homeward Bound install high-efficiency showerheads and water fixtures in its 80 apartments on campus in north Phoenix.

“This process highlights the importance of everyone doing their part to conserve water,” said Sally Smith, Homeward Bound’s director of facilities.  “We look forward to the conversion, saving water and the money we’ll save in the process.”

Homeward Bound assists homeless and domestic violence families with children achieve economic independence and secure long-term, safe housing.  It also works to break the cycle of homelessness and domestic violence.

Started in 1990 with one family and one house, Homeward Bound today manages 155 housing units and helps nearly 600 people – 400 of whom are children.  In 2000, Homeward Bound opened The Thunderbirds Family Village, a five-acre, secured campus with 80 two-bedroom housing units.

Participants in the Together We Conserve pledge contest at SRP’s www.TogetherWeConserve.com website will automatically be entered into a drawing to win weekly prizes such as smart irrigation controllers and movie passes.

The pledge contest – and the associated Homeward Bound water makeover -- is one of several initiatives launched by SRP to extend and enhance the Together We Conserve campaign that was unveiled last year in the lead up to the 100th anniversary of the completion of Theodore Roosevelt Dam and continues in 2012 during the celebration of the Arizona Centennial.

SRP is the largest provider of water to the greater Phoenix metropolitan area, delivering more than 800,000 acre-feet annually.
