This position resides within the Central Utilities Plant Within the Department of Facilities and Administrative Services. Reporting to the Operations/ Cogen Operations Supervisor, The Operating Engineer is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair and improvement of the Cogeneration and Central Heating/Cooling Plants/Cooling Loops. This position works on a rotating shift basis in order to provide 24 hour 7-day per week coverage



Main Responsibilities:



Serves as shift engineer in charge in the operation and routine maintenance of the Cogeneration Plant, Central Heating/ Cooling Plants, High/ Medium Temperature Water, Chilled /Condenser Water Distribution Systems, and Building Automation Systems (EMS)

Operates, maintains, and makes repairs to the cogeneration plant, generators, boilers, chillers, feed and vacuum pumps, fans, compressors, governors, and chemical treatment equipment. Responsible for performing preventive and remedial maintenance tasks necessary to ensure the continuous safe and efficient operation of these systems. This includes basic mechanical and electrical work.

Makes periodic comprehensive tests and takes readings of fuel consumption, pressure, room circulating units, draft conditions, temperature and steam flow, and other recordings. Performs water quality tests and chemically treats plant water systems.

Analyzes campus load requirements and makes appropriate adjustments to cogeneration plant KW import set point relative total load. Responsible for taking readings and maintaining logs as required. This includes generating fuel usage reports and other recordkeeping

Ensures plant operation maintains environmental compliance with NJ DEP and US EPA requirements cited in Title V air permit.

Responsible for water treatment monitoring and chemical application and system cleaning as required.



Required Qualifications:



Two (2) years of experience in the adjustment, repair, operation, and maintenance of air conditioning and heating plants and auxiliary equipment. An understanding of the operating principals of gas turbine engines, heat recovery steam generators is required, along with working knowledge of water treatment, AC/DC theory, instrumentation, microprocessors, switchgear, power generation and distribution systems as well as excellent mechanical skills



LICENSE: Applicant will be required to possess an Operating Engineer`s License(Blue Seal Minimum) of appropriate grade and type as issued by the New Jersey Department of Labor.



NOTE: Appointee may be required to possess a valid Air

Conditioning and Refrigeration Technician Certification of the appropriate

level, commensurate with type of equipment serviced, issued under the

authority of the Federal Environmental Protection Agency.



Appointee will be required to possess a driver`s license valid in New

Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility,

is necessary to perform in essential duties of the position.
