Making Better Managers: Lessons in Leadership, Trust and Transition

Help for new leaders and how to identify tomorrow’s managers.   May 2, 2025

By Dan Weltin, Editor-in-Chief

Facility managers often rise through the ranks based on technical skill — but stepping into a leadership role brings an entirely different challenge. In this conversation from Show Central at the recent NFMT Baltimore conference and trade show, Facility Editor-in-Chief Dan Weltin sits down with General Session speaker and leadership expert Andy Gager to explore what truly makes a good manager, and why so many are unprepared when they’re suddenly promoted.

Drawing from personal experience, Gager reflects on being thrust into a supervisory role with little warning — and even less training. He shares the common mistakes new managers make, like trying to stay “friends” with coworkers or struggling to delegate tasks.

To support new managers in making that leap successfully, tools like process mapping and the RACI chart (Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, Informed), can provide clarity about roles and responsibilities, eliminating the ambiguity that often leads to conflict or resentment when workplace dynamics shift.

Facility management is an aging industry and managers will need to identify the leaders of tomorrow. When it comes to leadership potential, Gager talk about why the most dependable “soldiers” often make better managers than top “superstars.” He breaks down the importance of recognizing different employee types and adapting leadership style accordingly — whether coaching rookies or managing difficult underperformers.

Listen to the full session to get inspired — and better equipped — to lead with confidence and clarity.
