Taiwan Friday celebrated the opening of the world's tallest building, Taipei 101; it is 1,676 feet high, with 101 stories.
The building is 183 feet taller than the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which has held the record until now.
Designed by Taiwan architect C.Y. Lee, the tower is light green and has been described as resembling a bamboo plant, unfurling in sections as it rises from the ground.
Construction took six years and cost $1.8 billion. The building boasts some of the world's speediest elevators, traveling from the fifth floor to the observatory on the 89th floor in just 37 seconds.
At the opening ceremony, President Chen Shui-bian praised the building for having already withstood two earthquakes during its construction, Channel NewsAsia reported.
