The New Orleans Principles: Celebrating the Rich History of New Orleans Through Commitment to a Sustainable Future, a document developed during the Gulf Coast Reconstruction charrettes held at Greenbuild 2005, has been completed and is available for download, the U.S. Green Building Council has announced.

Designed to assist the rebuilding efforts of the Gulf Coast communities ravaged by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the four charrettes covered topics including green communities, ecological restoration, affordable housing, and schools.

Charrette is a French word for cart that is used by the to reference an intense, on-the-spot design effort that takes place over a short period of time.

To download the document, go to http://green_reconstruction.buildinggreen.com/index.html.

The charrettes were conducted by USGBC, in partnership with the Enterprise Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, the Trust for Public Land and others.

The New Orleans Principles document reflects the work of the 160 people who attended the charrettes, approximately one-fifth of whom were representatives from the affected communities.

The charrette attendees included some of the leading voices in sustainable design and represented a broad range of expertise, such as urban planning, water management, engineering, and architecture.

USGBC says the principles will help create an achievable, engaging, long-term vision for New Orleans in coordination with the other work that is already underway. USGBC expects that additional reports on schools and affordable housing will be available soon.
